Sturbridge, MA — January 7th — The Brookfield Fire Department recently held chimney fire training for members of Sturbridge Firefighters Local 170. During the winter heating season, when chimney fires are more common, the training concentrated on response strategies that are regularly employed. Firefighters went over how to use chimney fire suppression equipment, safe ventilation techniques, and size-up procedures.

The crews also talked about how to examine attics and roof spaces for extension and how to coordinate external and interior operations. Departments can maintain uniform operational procedures and exchange experience through regional training events. Mutual-aid connections are strengthened and firefighters are trained to handle chimney fire events safely and effectively through joint drills like this one.
