On January 24, the Bristol Fire Department-RI announced that Chief of Department Michael DeMello has been sworn in as President of the Rhode Island Association of Fire Chiefs. The group, founded in the 1960s, serves as a statewide resource for fire departments throughout Rhode Island. The RIAFC assists with officer development, new technology training, and grant programs at the state and federal levels. According to fire officials, the organization plays an important role in state-wide coordination and professional growth. Chief DeMello becomes only the second chief from Bristol to hold the position. The first was former Chief David Sylvaria, who served as president from 1994 to 1995.
