A fourth-alarm fire destroyed a building at 440 Amherst Street in Nashua after a natural gas leak led to an explosion yesterday afternoon.
Crews were dispatched around 3 p.m. for a reported gas leak. While firefighters were on scene investigating, an explosion occurred, trapping three members in rubble. The firefighters transmitted a mayday, which was quickly cleared after members from Ladder 1 assisted them to safety. All three firefighters were transported to the hospital.
The explosion and resulting fire destroyed the building. The fire was brought under control after approximately three hours. Mutual aid departments from across the area responded to the scene and provided station coverage throughout the city.
