Westport Fire Reminds Residents to Check Carbon Monoxide Alarms

This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

Residents and other responders are being reminded by the Town of Westport Fire Department that cold weather increases the risk of carbon monoxide exposure, particularly during the winter months when heating systems and other heat sources are utilized more frequently. Fuel-burning appliances including furnaces, boilers, fireplaces, generators, and automobiles emit carbon monoxide, an odorless, colorless gas. According to fire department safety guidelines, carbon monoxide alarms should be placed on each floor of the house and close to sleeping quarters. They should also be tested frequently and have their batteries changed as needed. To ensure proper exhaust, snow and ice should be kept away from vents and flues.
