Operating as a FAST (Firefighter Assist and Search Team) assignment at a working structure fire on Fern Avenue in Rotterdam Fire District 2, the Fort Hunter Fire Company responded to their first incident of the year on January 2. Upon arrival, command reported considerable fire seen on the Charlie side of a single-story dwelling. Fort Hunter crews were allocated FAST tasks, functioning as a specialized unit focused entirely on firefighter safety, search, and rescue in the event that interior crews got troubled or trapped. In order to provide a prompt and well-coordinated response in the event of a firefighter emergency, FAST units are a specialist service offered to nearby departments during active fires. Firefighters operated under the incident command system while suppression attempts continued.
