January 2, 2026 — The Mashpee Fire Department assisted Mashpee Natural Resources on Thursday morning with the recovery of a water quality monitoring device from Santuit Pond after the equipment became trapped in ice.
Firefighters trained in ice and cold-water operations responded to safely access the frozen pond and remove the device without incident. Crews utilized specialized ice rescue equipment, safety lines, and controlled entry techniques to ensure both responder safety and protection of the equipment during the recovery.
The operation highlighted the value of interdepartmental cooperation and specialized winter rescue training, allowing the monitoring device to be retrieved while minimizing risk to personnel and the surrounding environment.
