January 24, 2026 —As a winter storm moved through northern Rhode Island, Woonsocket firefighters remained fully staffed and ready to respond while urging residents to limit travel and take extra precautions to stay safe. Fire officials emphasized that avoiding unnecessary travel during the storm helps snowplows and emergency vehicles operate more efficiently, improving response times when emergencies occur. Residents were also reminded to use safe heating methods, prepare emergency supplies in advance, and check on neighbors—particularly elderly residents and those who may need assistance during prolonged cold and snowy conditions.
Firefighters highlighted the importance of winter preparedness, including keeping fire hydrants clear of snow, maintaining working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and assembling a basic emergency “go-bag” with essentials such as food, water, medications, and flashlights. The department reiterated that community cooperation during severe weather plays a critical role in protecting lives and property.
