At 8:57 pm on Thursday, 1/29/26 the Norwich Fire Department with East Great Plain Ladder 5 & Rescue 5, Laurel Hill Engine 62, Mohegan Tribal FAST and an American Ambulance were dispatched to 53 Sunnyside Avenue for a house fire. The reporting party from 16 Clay Avenue said they could see the back of a house on fire through the woods.
Battalion 1 arrived at 9:02 with heavy fire from the Bravo/Charlie corner of a 2 story residence. Engine 3 stretched an 1.75” hose line through the front and knocked the bulk of the fire. Squad A laid in from the hydrant on the corner of Sunnyside and Clay but then reported the hydrant was frozen. Following that, Squad A pulled a 3 inch line to Engine 3 and gave them their 500 gallons of tank water.
Engine 2 pulled a 1.75” hose line to the rear and knocked down the porch that was burning. Engine 62 laid in from a hydrant on the corner of Sunnyside & Laurel Hill and tied into the supply line the Squad laid. Truck 1 performed the primary search and then went to the roof for vertical ventilation.
The second alarm was transmitted at 9:11, which added Yantic Engine 33, Preston Engine 11, Taftville Truck 25 and Sub Base FAST. A third hose line was then stretched to the second floor. Norwich Police carried a victim out to the street and Mohegan Tribe loaded them into a stokes basket. The victim was then brought down the hill, where care was turned over to American Ambulance. A short while later, American Ambulance transported a second victim. Car 1 had command, Battalion 1 was operations, Car 10 had accountability, Car 6 had the Charlie Sector and Car 5 had staging. The Norwich Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.
Norwich Public Utilities secured the power and the American Red Cross is assisting the displaced family. Norwich Public Works and State DOT assisted with icing conditions because the temperature was 8 degrees. Yantic Engine 31 covered Headquarters while Occum Engine 41 covered Greeneville.
