As a winter storm approaches, Southard Fire Department No. 1 reminded locals to maintain fire hydrants free of snow and ice. Fire officials emphasized the importance of hydrant access during emergencies, particularly in the winter when weather and road conditions can impact response times. When crews arrive on the scene, water supply operations may be delayed due to snow-covered or clogged hydrants. It is recommended that nearby hydrants be at least three feet away from homes and businesses. Firefighters can swiftly join hose lines and keep water flowing during fire operations by clearing a path. As part of their efforts to avoid neighborhood fires, fire departments throughout New Jersey frequently place a strong emphasis on hydrant upkeep during the winter.
