January 21, 2026 — Students at Charlotte Avenue Elementary turned a winter snow day into a lesson in community service by helping clear snow from neighborhood fire hydrants. As part of a challenge issued by their teacher, Mrs. Watkins, fifth graders were encouraged to dig out a local hydrant near their homes, helping ensure firefighters would have quick access in an emergency.
The effort drew praise from the Hamburg Volunteer Fire Department, which highlighted the students’ initiative as a simple but critical way residents can support public safety during heavy snowfall. School officials from the Hamburg Central School District also applauded the students for combining physical activity with civic responsibility, noting that small actions can make a big difference during winter weather.
