Route 16 Reopens After Weather-Related Crash Amid Whiteout Conditions in Chaffee

January 23, 2026 — The Chaffee-Sardinia Fire Company reported that NY Route 16 (Olean Road) was temporarily closed between NY Route 39 and Genesee Road following a motor vehicle accident during severe winter weather.
Fire officials cited whiteout conditions and blowing snow as contributing hazards, prompting the closure for emergency response and scene safety.
As of 4:18 p.m., the roadway was reopened to traffic; however, responders urged motorists to continue exercising caution as reduced visibility and drifting snow remained in the area. Drivers were advised to slow down, remain alert, and use alternate routes when possible as winter conditions persisted.
