January 23, 2026 — As temperatures across Western New York continue to drop, the Buffalo Fire Department issued a public safety reminder urging residents to take precautions to prevent frozen pipes and avoid dangerous thawing methods.

Fire officials cautioned against using open flames such as torches, candles, lighters, or propane heaters to thaw frozen pipes, noting that these methods can easily ignite hidden combustible materials, especially in older homes. Instead, the department recommends safer alternatives including wrapping exposed pipes with warm (not boiling) towels, opening cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around plumbing, and allowing faucets to drip slightly to relieve pressure.

Residents unsure how to safely address frozen or potentially damaged pipes are encouraged to contact a licensed plumber. Officials emphasized that a few extra minutes of caution can prevent fires, property damage, and emergencies, reminding residents to call 911 if they encounter immediate danger.
