In light of the recent winter weather, the Washington Township Fire Department asked citizens on January 26 to assist in keeping fire hydrants free of snow. Snow accumulation near fire hydrants can hinder firefighters' ability to swiftly establish a water supply, slowing suppression efforts and raising the risk to lives and property, according to fire officials. Hydrants should be cleared so that crews can function effectively in an emergency. In order to increase safety for their family and neighbors, participants in the department's junior firefighter program took the initiative to remove hydrants close to their houses and neighborhoods. The juniors' deeds were emphasized by the department as an illustration of civic duty and service.
