Fire officials say hydrants that are buried or blocked can slow down firefighting operations at a time when every second matters. Delays in accessing a water supply can increase the risk to both residents and responding firefighters. Residents are asked to shovel and maintain a clear space of about three feet around hydrants near their homes and to clear a path from the hydrant to the street. Taking a few minutes to clear snow can make a meaningful difference during an emergency response.
