Whiting, NJ — January 4 — After multiple people were seen walking and jumping on the ice at Harry Wright Lake, Whiting Fire Company Station 33 issued a warning about winter safety. To inform everyone involved about the risks associated with ice conditions, a member of the department's Water Rescue and Recovery Team stopped by. Even when ice appears solid, its thickness can suddenly alter, according to fire officials, and a single stride might cause abrupt ice failure and submersion in frigid water.
The department stressed that Manchester Township does not have any lakes or ponds that are regulated or authorized for ice activity. Safe conditions are not guaranteed by cold temperatures.
