The Dumont Volunteer Fire Department is urging locals to assist by keeping fire hydrants free of snow and ice in anticipation of a possible major winter storm. Clearing a hydrant that is on or close to your property can be crucial in an emergency. Due to the limited water capacity of fire apparatus, firefighters depend on quick access to hydrants for a steady flow of water. Time lost battling a fire is equivalent to every second spent excavating a hydrant. Hose kinks, which can significantly restrict water flow during operations, can also be avoided by keeping the area surrounding hydrants free.
