Due to the limited water capacity of fire apparatus, firefighters depend on quick access to hydrants for a steady flow of water. Time lost battling a fire is equivalent to every second spent excavating a hydrant. Hose kinks, which can significantly restrict water flow during operations, can also be avoided by keeping the area surrounding hydrants free.
