January 6, 2026 — The Highgate Volunteer Fire Department, in partnership with the Town of Highgate and the Vermont Department of Health, is reminding residents of the importance of safely storing medications to protect families and prevent misuse. As part of an ongoing community safety initiative, the department is promoting the use of medication lock boxes to reduce the risk of accidental poisoning, prescription misuse, and the spread of substance abuse. Fire officials note that unsecured medications can pose serious dangers, particularly to children, teens, and visitors, and emphasize that locking medications is a simple yet effective step toward preventing tragedy. A limited number of medication lock boxes are currently available to Highgate residents at no cost, and those interested are encouraged to contact the department for more information.
