January 4, 2026 — The Highgate Volunteer Fire Department is reminding residents and outdoor enthusiasts of the serious risk of carbon monoxide exposure in heated ice fishing shanties, urging the use of proper ventilation and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors during the winter season. Fire officials noted that many anglers rely on propane or fuel-powered heaters inside enclosed shanties, which can quickly allow carbon monoxide to build up to dangerous levels if fresh air is not circulating. Because carbon monoxide is colorless, odorless, and silent, occupants may not realize they are in danger until symptoms become severe. The department recommends partially opening a door or window to ensure airflow and installing an inexpensive CO alarm that can alert occupants before levels become life-threatening. Officials emphasized that these simple precautions can significantly reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning and help ensure a safe and enjoyable ice fishing season.
