Residents are being reminded by the Berkeley Heights Fire Department that regular charging practices might pose a significant fire danger. Lithium-ion batteries, which store a lot of energy, are used in phones, power banks, and other rechargeable gadgets. Batteries may suddenly fail due to overheating, damage, or incorrect charging. Not all battery fires start with flames. Many start with heat buildup, swelling, or the release of gases, often when devices are left charging unattended. Charging devices on beds, sofas, or pillows, or leaving them plugged in overnight near sleeping areas, increases the risk. Fire officials advise using only original or certified chargers, keeping gadgets off of soft surfaces, and charging them in prominent, open spaces. Unplug and stop using devices that feel abnormally hot, swell, hiss, crackle, or emit strong scents right away. Fire safety begins before smoke appears—by changing everyday habits.
