As the new year begins, the West Burke Fire Department is recognizing the dedication of its 100 percent volunteer membership following a record-breaking year. In 2025, the department responded to 89 calls for service—the highest total in its history—while also maintaining a demanding schedule of biweekly meetings, regular training, equipment and building maintenance, public events, and community assistance. Members additionally supported the local road crew and residents during another summer marked by catastrophic flooding. Department leaders expressed gratitude to Burke taxpayers for budget support, noting that while it covers operating expenses, major repairs or large equipment replacements remain a challenge. Officials also thanked the East Burke Fire Brigade, neighboring agencies, and dispatchers for their continued partnership, and encouraged community members interested in volunteering to reach out.
