A basement fire in a seven-story apartment building on January 11th, sent smoke throughout the structure prompting a three alarm response to assist in evacuations and fire extinguishment.
A second alarm was transmitted on arrival shortly before 6:30 AM at 85 Washington Street. Smoke vented from several floors of the building with residents evacuating and others hanging out their windows. A third alarm three minutes later summoned additional units to the scene. Lines were stretched to the basement as firefighters brought residents out from all floors via the interior stairs as well as by aerial ladders. Five aerial ladders were extended and two more stood by ready if needed.
The fire was quickly knocked down, but the smoke condition continued throughout. Dozens of residents as well as two firefighters were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. There were no fatalities. Reports state that over eighty residents were temporarily displaced. The cause is under investigation.
