PASSAIC, NJ — At approximately 5:45 p.m. on January 9, Passaic police received multiple calls reporting a fire at 160 Hope Ave. A responding police unit confirmed heavy black smoke coming from the rear windows of the home.

Battalion Chief Kovacs arrived on scene and was informed that a woman was still inside the residence on the second floor. As fire units arrived, a search crew was immediately deployed to locate her. The woman was found, removed from the home, and transported to St. Mary’s Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.

One firefighter was injured but was later released. Nine people were displaced by the fire. Two neighboring homes sustained minor damage, and their residents were able to return inside.

The fire caused significant damage to the second floor and attic of the home and was upgraded to a third alarm. Fire departments from Passaic County and Bergen County assisted Passaic units in battling the blaze.

The fire was turned over to the department’s investigation team to determine the cause.
