On December 23, shortly after 7:30 a.m., Cayuga County 911 sent the Genoa Volunteer Fire Department on automatic mutual aid to the King Ferry Fire Department and Southern Cayuga Instant Aid, Inc. in response to a single-car collision on NY Route 90 in the King Ferry district that may have resulted in injuries. Car 1, Car 2, and Engine 2 were among the Genoa units that responded. Command confirmed when they arrived that a single car had collided with a utility pole, and the only person inside had self-extricated. All three of the main electrical wires were dislocated from their insulators by the collision, posing an urgent safety risk. NYSEG, a utility corporation, was asked to secure the area. Firefighters from Genoa helped stabilise vehicles and provide patient care. The New York State Police, the Cayuga County Sheriff's Office, and the Aurora Volunteer Fire Department Ambulance all contributed extra help.
