At the Abbey Woods Water Tank on the west side of the city, Danbury Fire Department personnel coupled a planned equipment repair with a high-angle rescue drill on January 9. Radio and microwave communications, which are essential to municipal operations, are supported by the elevated location.
While a small repair was being done, rescue professionals took advantage of the tank's height of about 100 feet to practise rope and safety procedures. James Croswell, a high-angle rescue operations instructor, oversaw the training. In order to facilitate safe access and get ready for possible rescues from radio towers and water tanks, firefighters set up rope systems. During the operation, Mark Miguel helped with the communications equipment. The practice not only strengthened technical abilities but also gave crews a unique perspective of the city. The department is still prepared to tackle difficult rescue situations across the area.
