On January 4, Danbury Fire Department on-duty crews conducted ice rescue training at Lake Kenosia after a recent cold snap caused ice to form on a number of nearby lakes and ponds. It was safe to practise rescue tactics in the sunny weather. Crews saw areas of open water generated by active birds, such as bufflehead ducks, swans, and geese, throughout the training. Birds can be a sign of dangerous ice conditions, officials stressed. The surrounding ice was several inches thick, yet parts of the lake remained open due to bird movement.
