BAYPORT, NY — Jan. 9: Around 3:15 p.m., the Bayport Fire Department was called to a garbage truck fire. Firefighters arrived to find the truck emitting thick black smoke and severe fire conditions. In a short amount of time, crews put out a handline, shielded adjacent exposures, and contained the fire. The event did not result in any reported injuries. To make sure the fire was completely put out and the area was secure, firefighters stayed on the site. Residents were urged by the department to avoid emergency scenes and to give first responders the room they need to work safely. Chief 3-14-30 was in charge of all units.
