VIRGIL, NY — December 15 — A sulphur smell near a gas substation on South Cortland Virgil Road prompted the Virgil Fire Department to be called. A local citizen correctly called 911 after noticing an odd odour.

The first crew to arrive established scene control and verified a slight smell. Thermal imaging, air monitoring, and visual observation were all carried out by firefighters. After being informed, the gas supplier arrived on the scene. No active natural gas leak was discovered, and monitoring did not reveal excessive levels. The gas company scheduled follow-up service work and suggested that the odor might have been caused by a problem with the odorant injection system. Technical assistance was given by the HazMat Team of the Cortland Fire Department. The gas company official was given control of the scene.
