January 3, 2026 — Volunteers from the Westerly Fire Department stood in solemn tribute as Lieutenant Michael Carreiro was laid to rest, honoring a life defined by decades of dedicated public service.

Lieutenant Carreiro served the community for 27 years with the Westerly Police Department, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant, and continued his commitment to public safety as a Detective Sergeant with the University of Rhode Island Department of Public Safety. He was also a longtime member of the Westerly Ambulance Corps, answering the call whenever help was needed.

Lieutenant Carreiro passed away last weekend while off duty. In coordination with the Misquamicut Fire Department, Dunn's Corners Fire Department, Watch Hill Fire Department, and URI Public Safety, members lined the procession route throughout town in a powerful show of respect. An American flag was raised between ladder trucks from the Westerly Fire Department and the Kingston Fire Department at URI at River Bend Cemetery, serving as a final salute to a respected officer, colleague, and community servant.
