Eastern Broome Emergency Services and the Deposit Fire Department responded to a reported house fire in the Town of Sanford in the afternoon of December 24. A chair was unintentionally set on fire by a candle in a single-family home.

Before rescue personnel could arrive, the householder managed to put out the fire. After Engine 22 arrived on the scene, firefighters thoroughly inspected the area to make sure the fire was entirely extinguished and that no extension had taken place. All other units were kept in quarters as no more dangers were discovered. The event served as a warning about candle safety for fire authorities. Approximately twenty household candle fires are recorded nationwide every day on average. Candles should always be extinguished before leaving a room or going to bed, placed in sturdy holders, and kept at least 12 inches away from anything that might catch fire.
