NIVERVILLE, NY — December 23 — On Round Top Lake in the Town of Chatham, the Niverville Fire Department Inc., located at PO Box 422 (888 County Route 28), carried out its first real-world ice rescue exercise.
Over a dozen evolutions were covered throughout the roughly two and a half-hour training session. Firefighters used cold water suits to perform "go" rescue tactics and practiced tossing rescue equipment to a fictitious victim. The exercises concentrated on victim removal in icy circumstances, communication, and safe approach techniques. Additional ice rescue training is scheduled for next month, according to department officials. The department expressed gratitude to the owners and inhabitants of Gleason Mobile Home Park for granting access to the lake and to the participating members for training in chilly weather.
