Volunteer Firefighters Needed as Call Volume Remains High in West Mifflin

With four local fire companies serving the city, West Mifflin's fire protection still relies solely on volunteer labor. Homeville Volunteer Fire Company – West Mifflin #1, Duquesne Annex Volunteer Fire Company – West Mifflin #2, West Mifflin #3 Volunteer Fire Company, and Skyview Volunteer Fire Company – West Mifflin #4 protect West Mifflin. Over 1,000 emergency calls are handled annually by all four departments, which are fully manned by volunteers.
According to department officials, an older membership, additional training requirements, and hectic family schedules are all contributing factors to the overall fall in volunteer numbers. Departments observe that attracting new members is essential to sustaining service levels, even though donations are still necessary. Free training, county and municipal tax credits, and educational opportunities like the Community College of Allegheny County's FireVEST scholarship program are also available to volunteers. Non-operational members who assist with administration, fundraising, fire safety, and community engagement can also find opportunities. Residents interested in serving are encouraged to contact their local fire company for more information.
