South Plainfield, New Jersey — December 9 — After hearing about a car going into a ditch, the South Plainfield Volunteer Fire Department, which has its headquarters at 123 Maple Avenue, was sent to the South Avenue train crossing.

When Engine 5 and Rescue 1 arrived on the site, they verified that a passenger car had been hit by a train and ended up in a ditch next to the tracks. While evaluating the risks, firefighters secured the area and reported no trapping. The Middlesex County Firefighters Association IAFF Local 3451 was asked to help with mitigation since the truck was leaking fluids into a nearby creek. Until the situation was stabilized and environmental issues were resolved, units stayed on the scene.
