Trough Creek Valley, Pa. — December 21 — Following a large equipment update in advance of winter operations, the Trough Creek Valley Volunteer Fire Company greatly increased its capacity for rescue and suppression this month.

In order to improve extrication efficiency for the company's new squad, department members drove to Harrisburg to finish a number of equipment exchanges and acquisitions. The improvement includes switching to a Hurst hydraulic system, which maintains portability when a longer reach is required while enabling crews to handle up to four tools simultaneously using a grab-and-go arrangement.

Upgraded rescue rams, a 40-inch spreader, Hurst power units and hoses, a battery-operated combi tool, Milwaukee power tools, new hooks, nozzles, tanker and brush truck fittings, a low-level turbo draft strainer, and more gated valves are among the new features. The department also obtained thousands of feet of supply hose and brush from local partners, such as DCNR and Beale Township, through contributions and swaps.

After returning to quarters, workers responded to two weather-related events despite the hectic day. Fire officials expressed gratitude to community members and local partners for their assistance, pointing out that the department is still well-prepared and equipped for the upcoming year.
