Camden, ME — October 16 — On Friday, the Camden, Maine Fire & Rescue department executed chairlift evacuation drills at the Camden Snow Bowl in close collaboration with the Ragged Mountain Ski Patrol, thereby establishing essential operational protocols for the forthcoming winter season.

Even amid freezing conditions, personnel participated in the drill to evaluate protocols for the safe extraction of passengers from a stalled chairlift. The training emphasized interagency coordination between firefighters and ski patrol members, alongside the proper deployment of rescue equipment and strategic planning for emergency response.

The execution of chairlift evacuations mandates the deployment of trained personnel proficient in operating at elevated altitudes with specialized rigging, harnesses, and rescue apparatus. These crews must possess the capability to access passengers, securely integrate them into evacuation systems, and subsequently lower them to the ground with precision and safety.

The joint exercise afforded both groups a vital opportunity to recalibrate their respective roles and refine communication protocols in the event of an emergency. By collaborating prior to the commencement of the ski season, responding personnel were able to gain a comprehensive understanding of the available equipment and rescue methodologies, thereby ensuring operational readiness on the mountain.

The Ragged Mountain Ski Patrol ensured guest safety at Snow Bowl by providing emergency medical response, conducting search and rescue operations, and executing lift evacuations, with regular training sessions essential for maintaining these critical competencies.

Camden Fire & Rescue has previously engaged in chairlift evacuation drills alongside ski patrol teams and other rescue specialists, underscoring the critical importance of regional collaboration in managing mountain emergencies. This training initiative equipped both organizations to effectively navigate the upcoming winter season while sustaining a state of preparedness for any potential lift emergencies.
