South Berwick, Maine — October 7, 2026 — First-graders from Central School visited the South Berwick Fire Department on Wednesday for a practical fire safety program.

The visit was included in the department's community outreach initiatives during Fire Prevention Week. Baggs, the Crew Chief, guided the session, covering fire prevention, actions for a fire emergency, 911 procedures, and the details dispatchers require from callers.

Pupils were taught the appearance and sounds firefighters produce while wearing their gear. The presentation acquainted children with the sights and sounds they could experience during an emergency. Crew Chief Baggs tested the students on the information covered during the program, giving them an opportunity to share what they had learned. The children also had time to explore the fire apparatus and look at the equipment firefighters use during emergency responses.
