Pittston, ME — October 15 — Personnel from the Pittston, Randolph, and West Gardiner fire departments participated in a foundational pump operations course, which integrated theoretical instruction with applied, hands-on training.

Comprising two Thursday evening classroom sessions culminating in a day of practical application on October 15, the program centered on drafting operations. Firefighters honed their skills in sustaining a consistent water supply and executing the critical transition from drafting to delivering water via the fire pump.

Under the direction of West Gardiner Fire Chief Michael Gross, the training session focused on cultivating the requisite proficiency for firefighters to maneuver pumping apparatus during emergency responses. These practical exercises provided participants with a vital platform to synthesize theoretical instruction with hands-on execution, thereby reinforcing their self-assurance in overseeing critical water supply operations.

The drafting procedure empowered firefighters to extract water from static reservoirs, including portable tanks, lakes, or ponds, in scenarios where a pressurized supply was unavailable. Sustaining this flow was critical to ensuring the continuous operation of hose lines throughout fire suppression efforts.

In addition to fundamental pump operation and water supply competencies, the Maine Fire Service Institute integrated these essential skills into its Basic Pump Operator Course, which comprehensively addressed the utilization of fire pumps and the execution of practical water delivery procedures. The Pittston Fire Department honored Chief Gross for his dedication to disseminating his expertise, thereby providing local firefighters with a vital opportunity to refine and fortify their essential competencies.
