Monmouth, ME — October 7 — As part of Fire Prevention Week initiatives, firefighters from the Monmouth Fire Department delivered essential safety education to approximately 122 students enrolled at Monmouth Memorial School.
The firefighters addressed fundamental fire safety protocols, encompassing the formulation of home escape plans, the identification of dual egress routes from every room, the imperative to crawl beneath smoke-filled environments, and the critical directive to remain outside once safely evacuated. Concurrently, students were instructed to designate a specific outdoor rendezvous point, immediately dial 911 in emergencies, and abstain from handling matches or lighters.
During a session titled "Friendly Firefighter," fire personnel instructed students on the protective ensembles and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) utilized during emergency operations. One firefighter provided a live demonstration of the proper procedures for donning and doffing this critical gear. Subsequently, two students from each cohort were selected to volunteer and simulate the role of firefighters, donning the equipment themselves.
Prior to examining the apparatus within the fire truck cab, the children engaged in the critical life-saving maneuver of stop, drop, and roll. Subsequently, they inspected the department's fire safety trailer, where they honed their skills in detecting heat radiating through doors and understood the function of fire blankets in sealing off smoke infiltration. While the younger cohort simulated evacuation by crawling through a smoke-laden room, their older counterparts practiced the distinct protocol of exiting via a window and deploying a ladder.
The instructional modules reinforced conventional fire evacuation protocols, emphasizing the necessity of maintaining access to two separate exits, remaining low beneath the smoke layer, and converging at a predetermined safe assembly point outdoors. Twelve firefighters participated in the initiative, providing hands-on safety instruction to students within the local community.
