Hudson, N.H. — October 24 — Throughout the week, Hudson Fire Department personnel engaged in tanker pump training, executing a variety of water supply operations essential for fireground assignments.
During the training session, personnel executed a sequence of critical operations encompassing the direct transfer of water from a tanker to a handline, the reception of supplies from an engine, and drafting from a portable tank. These exercises were conducted as integral components of the department's tanker operator sign-off protocol.
These drills afforded firefighters hands-on proficiency in operating the tanker's pump and associated water delivery systems.
Furthermore, drafting from a portable tank enabled personnel to hone their skills in extracting water from temporary supplies, a critical capability when a direct connection to a pressurized water source is unavailable.
The New Hampshire Fire Academy has designated portable tank operations and drafting as critical competencies within water supply protocols. Its instructional framework comprehensively addresses the strategic positioning of portable tanks, the deployment of hard suction hose and strainers, and the procedural requirements for replenishing an engine utilizing a mobile water source.
These competencies enabled operational units to function effectively in environments where hydrants or other pressurized water sources were inaccessible. Through the deployment of tankers and portable tanks, a reliable water supply could be established at the incident scene.
The Hudson Fire Department leveraged this training to ensure its personnel were fully equipped to deploy the tanker apparatus with precision and safety during emergency responses. Successfully concluding the mandated exercises constituted a fundamental component of the department's protocol for certifying members to operate the specialized equipment.
