North Yarmouth, ME - North Yarmouth Fire Rescue Chief Gregory Payson concluded an intensive, two-part Utility Task Vehicle (UTV) safety and tactical operations course for personnel of the Cumberland Fire Department on Thursday evening in Cumberland County.

The specialized training program concluded on Thursday, October 29, 2026, wrapping up a comprehensive curriculum designed to ensure emergency responders operate off-road rescue apparatus safely under demanding field conditions.

Cumberland firefighters completed the initial classroom and theoretical phase the previous week, which covered machine dynamics, rollover protection, winching mechanics, weight distribution, and navigation protocols.

During Thursday’s session, Chief Payson guided members through the practical, hands-on driving and maneuvering component. Crews navigated varied terrain, evaluated obstacle negotiation, and drilled on rapid deployment techniques commonly required during wildland fire suppression, search and rescue operations, and remote patient extrications.

Department leaders highlighted that standardized cross-agency instruction builds essential operational readiness across neighboring Cumberland County services, ensuring personnel can safely access challenging off-road topography when conventional apparatus cannot deploy.
