Lyme, CT — October 20 — Personnel from the Lyme Fire Company executed a specialized training exercise at Hamburg Fire Station, with a specific emphasis on protocols for combating chimney fires, strategic ladder deployment, and overarching firefighter safety measures.

Commencing at 7:00 p.m., the evening training session addressed both interior and exterior operational protocols, prioritizing effective communication, the correct application of laddering techniques, and adherence to safety standards during chimney fire incidents.

Firefighters executed two training evolutions on the station roof, an environment whose dimensions and steep pitch introduced complexities absent from typical residential structures.

This configuration provided an ideal setting for personnel to refine ladder deployment techniques under demanding circumstances while simultaneously enhancing their proficiency in maintaining safety at elevated positions.

The department observed enhanced inter-team communication throughout the exercises, yet the necessity for clear dialogue during fireground operations persisted, especially when crews were deployed across distinct sectors of a structure.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the accumulation of creosote—a highly combustible residue that frequently builds up within flues—constitutes a significant hazard, as it can facilitate the spread of chimney fires into adjacent structural components.

In accordance with NIOSH guidelines, the correct establishment and utilization of ladders remain a critical component of firefighter safety protocols. The training facilitated Lyme firefighters in reviewing established protocols and enhancing their readiness to respond to chimney fire incidents throughout the heating season.
