Abington, Mass. — October 6, 2026 — Abington Fire Department and Abington Firefighters Local 2080 reported the death of retired Deputy Chief D. Leo Donovan, age 89, who passed away on October 6.

Donovan started his fire service career as a call firefighter in 1960 and became a permanent firefighter in 1962. He moved up the department’s ladder and retired as deputy chief in 1992, ending a 32-year career serving Abington and its residents.

He was among the founders of Abington Firefighters Local 2080. The union’s charter, which bears his name, still hangs at the department’s headquarters station. Before joining the department, Donovan spent four years in the U.S. Air Force, working in cryptography. After leaving the fire department, he stayed active in Abington by serving on local boards and committees, including the Sewer Commission and Golf Committee. He served as the town’s Sealer of Weights and Measures through 2018.

Donovan lived in Abington for his whole life. He leaves behind his wife Susan, three children, grandchildren and extended family.

The department and Local 2080 extended condolences to the Donovan family, promising to preserve his legacy.
