Vista, N.Y. — October 19, 2026 — The Vista Fire Department focused its Monday night drills on firefighter bailout procedures and downed firefighter EMS operations.
During the bailout training, firefighters practiced using the personal bailout systems carried by interior members. They reviewed how to deploy and operate the equipment before practicing emergency escape techniques from an upper floor when conditions worsen and a normal exit is no longer available.
Bailout systems provide firefighters with an emergency escape option from an elevated position during a fire. Although these systems are rarely needed, regular hands-on training helps members become familiar with the equipment and its operation.
The department said bailout training is required annually for interior firefighters. At the same time, Vista EMS personnel trained in the care of an injured or medically compromised firefighter. The drill covered patient assessment, rapid removal of firefighting gear and self-contained breathing apparatus when needed, airway management, CPR and AED use, patient packaging, and coordination of continued medical care after the firefighter is removed from the hazard area.
The department noted that a downed firefighter incident requires close coordination between fire and EMS personnel. Fire crews work to remove the member from danger, while EMS personnel prepare to provide specialized medical care. Vista Fire Department provides both fire and EMS services to the community. Joint training helps members understand each other’s roles and prepare to work together during complex emergency incidents.
