This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

Peekskill, N.Y. — October 11, 2026 — Members of the City of Peekskill Fire Department completed a week of training focused on firefighter self-rescue and hazardous materials response.

At the department, firefighters took part in their quarterly refresher on personal safety and bailout systems. These rope-based systems are carried by firefighters to support self-rescue from elevated areas above the ground floor. Regular practice helps members maintain the skills needed to deploy the equipment quickly during an emergency.

More than a dozen Peekskill firefighters also attended hazardous materials training at the Westchester County Department of Emergency Services Fire Training Center. They trained alongside members from other county departments on decontamination procedures, atmospheric monitoring, personal protective equipment donning and doffing, and rescue of a downed technician.
