Middlesex, N.Y. — October 5, 2026 — The board praised Assistant Chief Sergei Mays for his service, leadership, technical rescue training, and commitment to emergency medical services in a recent “Member Monday” feature.
Mays started with the company in 2019 and held positions like Captain and EMS Captain, eventually rising to Assistant Chief. He is an NYS EMT with certifications in fire operations, vehicle rescue, pump handling, emergency vehicle driving, and specialized rescue techniques.
His recent training includes a 32-hour New York State Rope Rescue Technician course. A report published by Finger Lakes Daily News in September also identified Mays, Assistant Chief Richard Abbey and Captain Curvin Nolt as members who completed the course. The report said participants passed written and practical assessments, adding to the company’s technical rescue capabilities.
Mays is also scheduled to attend Firefighter Survival: Self Rescue training, according to the department’s recognition post. He recently became an American Heart Association Basic Life Support instructor, expanding his role in CPR and BLS education. The American Heart Association’s BLS program covers skills such as CPR, ventilation, AED use and team response during resuscitation.
Beyond Middlesex Hose Company, Mays serves on the Regional Emergency Medical Advisory Committee and is a member of the Ontario County Rope Rescue Team. He also serves with Yates County EMS and Middlesex Valley Volunteer Ambulance Service.
The department said Mays places a strong value on community involvement, especially connecting children and young people with the fire service. Community events give families opportunities to meet responders, learn about equipment and become familiar with the department outside of emergency calls.
Mays’ service has also been recognized within the company. He received the Service Beyond the Call Award in 2022 and was named a Firefighter of the Year in 2023.
The department thanked Mays for his continued commitment to training, leadership, EMS, technical rescue and community service.
