Eden, N.Y. — October 7 — Members of the Eden Fire Department No.1 visited Grover L.Priess (GLP) Primary School and Eden Elementary School during Fire Prevention Week to educate students from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade on fire safety.
The firefighters discussed what to do if a fire occurs, when to call 911, how to create a home escape plan, and how to use the stop, drop, and roll method if clothing catches fire. They also explained the importance of smoke alarms and why it is vital to have working alarms for early warning.
Students had the opportunity to see what firefighters look and sound like while wearing their protective gear and breathing equipment. This visit helped children become more familiar with firefighters and learn about how emergency crews operate during a crisis.
The National Fire Protection Association suggests that families should plan two escape routes from each room, practice their escape plan regularly, and select a safe meeting spot outside the home. The organization also recommends installing smoke alarms in bedrooms, outside sleeping areas, and on every level of the home.
The department expressed gratitude to the teachers, school staff, and students for welcoming the firefighters and participating in the sessions.
School visits continue to play a key role in community fire prevention initiatives. By educating children at a young age, firefighters help students gain practical knowledge that they can share with their families and use to be better prepared for emergencies.
