Findley Lake, N.Y. — October 7 — Members of the Findley Lake Volunteer Fire Department joined mutual aid partners from Stanley Hose Company for a Fire Prevention Week event at Sherman Central School.During the visit, students were taught about fire safety and familiarized themselves with emergency response equipment.

Firefighters shared information on daily safety routines and emphasized the importance of using electronic devices responsibly.

The department showcased its mini pumper and fire boat, allowing students to view the equipment closely and gain a better understanding of the tools used by local emergency responders.

The presentation centered around the 2026 Fire Prevention Week theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower.” The National Fire Protection Association supported the campaign from October 4 to October 10, focusing on reducing fire hazards related to lithium-ion batteries in phones, tablets, laptops, e-bikes, and power tools.

Students were taught to use manufacturer-approved chargers, charge devices on hard, flat surfaces, and unplug them once fully charged. Firefighters also informed students that devices showing signs of swelling, unusual heat, or strange odors should not be used anymore.

The visit underscored the importance of collaboration between local departments and schools in promoting fire prevention.

Findley Lake firefighters expressed their gratitude to Sherman Central School for hosting the program and to Stanley Hose Company for their support.
