Falconer, N.Y. — October 19 — Members of the Falconer Fire Department participated in late-season training on Monday, October 19, 2026, focusing on drafting and pump operations. This exercise reviewed essential water supply techniques that could be necessary during emergency situations.
The training centered on drawing water from natural sources like rivers, creeks, or ponds. While the department mainly serves an area with fire hydrants, practicing alternative water supply methods ensures firefighters are prepared if hydrants are not available or do not provide sufficient water.
During the drafting exercises, firefighters used suction equipment and the apparatus pump to extract water from a static source and transport it through hose lines for fire suppression. These operations required correct equipment setup, secure connections, and teamwork between pump operators and other team members.
The New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control includes subjects such as drafting, pump controls, hydraulics, and water delivery in its apparatus operator training programs.
Consistent practice helps firefighters keep their skills sharp and adapt to changing water supply conditions. Even departments with reliable hydrant systems can benefit from reviewing these procedures in case of system failures or incidents outside the hydrant network.
The training reinforced the Falconer Fire Department’s commitment to maintaining operational readiness and improving water supply capabilities as the winter season approaches. The department is based at 115 Davis Street in Falconer, New York.
