Falconer, N.Y. — October 10 — Members of the Falconer Fire Department visited Fenner Elementary School as part of Fire Prevention Week, providing students with a chance to learn about firefighting equipment and fundamental fire safety measures.
During their visit, the students were shown the protective gear used by firefighters and explained how it helps keep them safe during emergencies. The firefighters also demonstrated the “Stop, Drop and Roll” method, which teaches children the correct action to take if their clothes catch fire.
This school-based presentation was part of the fire department's broader community education initiatives, helping young students recognize fire dangers and how to react during an emergency. The opportunity to meet firefighters directly also allowed students to become more familiar with the people and tools involved in emergency situations.
Fire Prevention Week took place from October 4 to October 10 in 2026. The National Fire Protection Association’s theme for that year, “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” focused on the importance of safely charging electronic devices that use lithium-ion batteries.
Families were encouraged to review their home fire escape plans, practice having two exit routes from each room, choose a safe outdoor meeting spot, and regularly test smoke alarms. These actions helped reinforce the safety lessons that the students learned at school.
The visit emphasized the role of local firefighters in educating the public about practical safety skills and supporting families in reducing fire risks within their homes and communities.
