Busti, N.Y. — October 13 — Members of the Busti Fire Department Inc. participated in a training exercise focused on responding to chimney fires. This session was part of the department’s preparation for the approaching colder months and the increased use of home heating systems.
During the drill, firefighters reviewed specialized tools and techniques for managing chimney fires. They examined the equipment and strategies necessary for dealing with fires in chimney flues, while also learning how to stop fire from spreading into surrounding walls, ceilings, or other parts of a building.
Chimney fires can happen when creosote, a flammable substance formed from burning wood, builds up inside the chimney.
According to the U.S.Environmental Protection Agency, creosote forms when smoke cools and condenses on the inside of chimney walls. If this residue accumulates in large amounts, it can catch fire and create a dangerous situation.
Training before the heating season allowed firefighters to review procedures for incidents that may involve hidden fire spread and difficult access. These regular drills gave members the chance to practice using specialized equipment and enhance their teamwork during emergency responses.
Fire safety organizations advise having chimneys inspected at least once a year and cleaned when necessary to minimize creosote buildup.
The October 13 drill was part of the department’s continuous training efforts and helped prepare its members for chimney-related emergencies during the fall and winter. The Busti Fire Department serves the community from its station located at 886 Mill Road in Jamestown.
