Owasco, N.Y. — October 19 — Members of the Owasco Fire Department carried out pump operator and water flow training on Monday. The session focused on essential skills required to assist in fire suppression efforts.

The training allowed firefighters to practice operating fire apparatus pumps and managing water flow during emergency situations. Pump operators are responsible for ensuring a continuous water supply to hose lines and helping crews maintain the necessary flow and pressure for effective firefighting.

The training included instruction on pump controls, water supply options, pressure needs and nozzle flow rates. These skills enable operators to adapt to different conditions and support firefighters at the scene of an incident. The New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control provides an Apparatus Operator-Pump course that covers pump controls, hydraulics, fire streams and pumping operations.

Water flow training also enables crews to review how water travels from its source through the apparatus and hose lines to the point of use. Regular practice ensures effective coordination between pump operators and firefighters handling the hose lines.

The Owasco Fire Department, located at 7174 Owasco Road in Auburn, serves the local community and regularly conducts training as part of its preparedness efforts.

The October 19 training emphasized the value of hands-on practice in maintaining equipment knowledge, following safe pumping procedures and ensuring reliable water delivery during emergency incidents.
